About Mick Wren Art

Mick Wren Art is the channel through which I promote and sell my art work.

I came to painting late in life but have always had the ability to pick up a pencil and make a fair representation of something.  In 2009 I decided to see if I could capitalise on my drawing skills by learning to paint.  Since then I have largely taught myself by extensive reading and studying of those painters that inspire me.

I spend most of my leisure time running, almost entirely off-road, and ideally in the hills and mountains.  I  have completed many mountain marathons, fell races and ultra-trail races including the Lakeland 100. My favourite running areas are the Lake District and the Alps.  This love of the outdoors provides the obvious subject matter for my paintings: landscapes; and the obvious medium to use was oil paints with their very rich range of good earthy colours.  I also wanted to add a twist to this by populating these landscapes with people making use of them, such as runners, walkers and climbers.  There is a wonderful synergy between running through a landscape and then painting it.

In terms of style I aim for a form of detailed impressionism (if that’s not an oxymoron) where the main subject is dealt with in some detail but the remainder is achieved using more lose brushstrokes.  I don’t always achieve this as my natural inclination is towards detail everywhere.  In reading about other painters it has become clear that painters are never satisfied with their work and are always striving to improve in one direction or another.  I recognise this and whilst I can see the faults in each of my paintings I am generally satisfied with them considering the stage I am at in my journey to become an established painter.

In addition to landscapes I am interested in portraiture (animals as well as people) and the occasional still life.  I’m also very happy to discuss commissions.

I am using one of my paintings to raise money for charity.  It is my picture of Joss Naylor MBE.  Joss is a legend in fell running and Cumbrian circles for his prowess over decades in one of the toughest sports there is and also for his unstinting charity work.  I have published two sets of limited edition prints of the painting with the profits going to the Eden House Children’s Hospice in Carlisle.  Joss very kindly agreed to sign the Certificates of Authenticity that come with each print.  He also bought the original painting from me, the proceeds from which have gone into the hospice pot.  The photo on the left shows Joss and me with the painting.
